in this space
between
what was &
what will be
i have lost all sense
of direction
which way is north?
i should have paid
closed attention
something about moss
on trees
or a stick’s shadow
how do i survive
in these woods?
which berries
are edible?
which mushrooms
will kill me?
can i trust my instincts
to lead me to fresh water
or will i only find
brackish sludge?
the rain makes melodies
circles bloom in the lake
geese and ducks go about their
day secure in their place here
the clouds transform
gas into liquid
like it’s no big deal
just an everyday
miracle
my clumsy feet
trip on roots
but i keep moving
forward
